September Update

CAPS GOOD NEWS REPORT

We have been blessed over the past couple of months to help participate in the VERP (Virginia Eviction Reduction Pilot) program in conjunction with ForKids and the Virginia Legal Aid Society. This has been a great boon for landlords as tenants who are unable to catch up their rent payments and face eviction are able to apply. Eight families that have been vetted through our partnerships have been blessed with grant funds to prevent their eviction. We are so happy to be able to be involved in this partnership.

CHURCH SPOTLIGHT

James River Community Church, is located at 8909 Eclipse Drive, Suffolk, VA. Our Board President and Treasurer, Tim and Kim Bowden, our Director, Mary Sue Rawls, and our Services Administrator, Jan Pruden, all attend James River. Visit us Sundays at 10am. James River was also one of the founding churches of CAPS! Pastor Claude Marshall served as the first Secretary of our Board. We have been honored to be a member of CAPS for over twelve years!

Every week, we gather together as a church to hear from God’s Word, and respond with worship, and to encourage one another. We come together, under the authority of God’s Word, to hear God’s Word, and sing God’s Word, and pray God’s Word, and see God’s Word on display. We would love for you to join us!

OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY

CAPS can use some extra donations for Food Lion cards and Walmart cards. Thank you to Oakland UCC who gave generously for us to purchase bus passes! We have some opportunities for you as churches, organizations, and individuals to help some families that have needs beyond what CAPS can meet.

Family of Six: This family of six siblings lost their mother Aug 4. The oldest sibling is 19 and the youngest is 5. The mother had a voucher, but the siblings can only keep the voucher with a $2375 deposit because they need a 5-bedroom home. They would not owe any monthly rent after getting into the home because of their income. The mother’s sister is here to keep the family together and get the younger ones in school while they work on getting a permanent home. While CAPS feels this is a legitimate crisis situation, we cannot meet the total need. If you would like to specifically help this family, donate here and choose Family of Six on the donation page and your donation will go straight toward this deposit.

Single Dad: This father has been working through a temp agency part time and is expecting a layoff. His realty company is working with him, and he is diligently seeking permanent employment, however he currently owes over $3,000 in rent. If you would like to help this family, donate here and choose Single Dad on the donation page and your donation will directly help him and his kids.

Single Mom with Epileptic Child: This mother has been helped by ForKids, but is now on her own. She had to leave her job at Amazon to care for the needs of her epileptic child. She is seeking employment, but in the meantime she needs to get her September rent paid, which is a little over $1400. If you would like to help this family, donate here and choose Single Mom with Epileptic Child on the donation page and your donation will directly help her and the children.

We have added these designations on our donor page, but we have many other needs. If you donate to Wherever Needed Most, we are happy to steward your donation well.

PLEASE PRAY WITH US

-Pray for more member churches!

-Pray that our member churches are able to continue to support CAPS at their current level of giving.

-Pray for the Lord to provide just the right people for our open positions: Director and Church Night Shelter Facilitator.

-Pray for provision for all our partners in the gospel. We have a very generous community.

-Pray that our grant applications will be received favorably and that we will receive enough to meet our yearly budget obligations and effectively help the residents of Suffolk experiencing crisis situations.

PRAY FOR OUR BBQ FUNDRAISER TO BE A SUCCESS!!! CAPS has experienced some very dry weeks and months with finances. While our God is faithful to meet our needs, our faith is tested often. If you cannot purchase a meal for the fundraiser, please consider donating funds. We appreciate the support of our community so much!
