CAPS July Update

CAPS GOOD NEWS REPORT

Have you ever witnessed or counseled someone who was so affected they almost immediately read Scripture to you? This happened to Deandra last week as she was speaking at length with a gentleman who came in seeking help with “everything.” He was homeless and discouraged. After Deandra left him he knocked on the door with the Bible he had picked up off the table in the waiting room open to a Psalm that he said his grandmother used to quote all the time. He felt God validating him and encouraging him. What a joyful response after being so discouraged. Our God is so faithful!

CHURCH SPOTLIGHT: BELIEVERS CHURCH

Believers Church, located at 6801 Bridgeway Dr, Suffolk, VA 23435. Here’s a synopsis of their current missions:

Believers continues to serve in Northern Suffolk. Our mission is to make Jesus #1, one person at a time. This month we are sending 75 students to camp with Word of Life in New York. We are also preparing for a missions trip with our partners at Mosaico Church in Nashville, TN in September. We’re gearing up for a summer essential items drive for our local food bank, recruiting small group leaders for our next semester and continuously tweaking our guest experience to best serve our community as they get connected. As we are deep into budget season, please pray that we will have clarity on how to be even more radically generous, and to map out plans that lead to more folks hearing the hope of Jesus. It is also our hope to have more opportunities to serve those in need through our neighborhood schools.

OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY

The Suffolk Public Library can use your help this summer!

They are having a huge influx of kids for the summer programs both onsite and mobile. They have been offering lunch and a bottled water during the programs. One organization is providing 20 sandwiches a day (100/week), but they have a shortage of around 50 sandwiches per week. They are looking to avoid nuts, so cheese, ham and cheese, or turkey and cheese are good choices. The bread does not matter. No condiments, the library will take care of those. CAPS is providing some 8 oz water bottles.

If you or your church is interested in this project, please contact Amanda Henderson at

(757) 362-8035, and she will help you.

Sandwiches can be delivered on Mondays or Wednesdays to the location at 443 W Washington Street before 11 am.

CAPS can use some extra donations for Food Lion cards, Walmart cards, and Bus Passes. Our monthly assistance budget has been reduced to meet our yearly budget with additional salaries. We have had to suspend buying Food Lion grocery cards, which we desire to keep on hand for people who need to supplement and stretch their food dollars in order to pay their bills. (They also receive a list of food pantries operating in Suffolk.) We can get a 5% discount by ordering bulk cards through Cashstar. We try to keep six or so Walmart cards on hand for fire victims if they need clothes or shoes that we or another organization do not have available, and we give out around 100 bus passes every quarter to people with no transportation trying to get to work or interviews, the doctor, Social Services or Social Security, etc. We get these at a 50% discount. We will not be purchasing any of these out of our monthly budget until we can return to a healthy monthly assistance amount.

We have added these designations on our donor page, but we have many other needs as well. If you donate to Wherever Needed Most, we are happy to steward your donation well.
